FRESH CHESTNUTS

The Castanea sativa is the most widespread chestnut type in Europe. Healthy and nutritious fruit, the chestnut was once an essential food of the people, and in the past, it was called “bread of the poor”.

Thanks to their great content in complex carbohydrates, chestnuts are a true staple food, able to replace the most valuable cereals.

The chestnut has an high quality, because it has an high percentage of starches combined with a discreet content of fat, protein, mineral salts (especially potassium, phosphorus, sulphur, magnesium, calcium, iron) and vitamins (C, B1, B2 and PP). These features, combined with the excellent digestibility, make the chestnut an ideal food for sportsmen.

 

The chestnuts husk protects the precious fruit from chemical treatment making it’s an organic product.

 

The fresh chestnuts season start in the middle of September and lasts until the end of December.

 

TIPS AND CURIOSITY 

The fresh chestnuts are gluten free.

The infusion and decoction, rich in tannins, are useful in cases of bronchitis and diarrhoea.

Thanks to their antiseptic action, the gargles with chestnuts leaves infusion are an excellent remedy for throat and mouth inflammation.

The chestnuts boiling water is an excellent fertilizer for plants.
